Tired? I Guess! - Wednesday, June 11

Although we did not hike anywhere yesterday, unless you call the mile walk through Bishop from the Podiatrist office to the bakery to Kmart a hike, we did not call it a zero day because we really did not get to just rest. We talked about it, and decided our "official" zero day would be today. It's not that we pushed hard physically or mentally yesterday, we just didn't get a down day. Bus transfers, phone calls to podiatrists, motel reservations, and finding our way around kept us engaged. So I guess it should be no surprise that when we finally let ourselves have a totally no responsibility day, a true zero, we slept until 9:45. Sally does this occasionally, but I cannot remember the last time I slept past 7:30. I think we might have been tired. Of course, we had just hiked 94 miles in 9 days, all of it above 8000' and much above 10,000'.  I'd just turned 60 three weeks ago, but as my friend Gary Womeldorff says, "When age becomes an excuse, anything is impossible!"  I think we just needed the rest.

We slowly got moving and by noon wandered down to the bus stop to ride to the Von's grocery store for some real food rather than trail food.  The bus never showed so we asked a woman in a Mammoth Mtn SUV for a ride and she happily obliged. On the short ride across town we found she was a manager for hiring at the resort and in charge of housing. We inquired about house sitting in the area and she offered her email and number in case we wanted to work as lifties, or in concessions or in the rental shop and stay in employee housing.

At Von's we found the real stuff.  Lettuce, nectarines, apples, bananas, green beans, watermelon, cheese, lunch meat and cucumbers graced our grocery cart at checkout. We had concerns about the shock to our digestive system so we avoided grapes and other "loosening" agents.

We cruised the web and munched lunch after our exertions, then headed out again for the thrift store to find a swimming suit for Sally. There are two thrifts in town. We ended up at the Disabled Athletes Thrift. Sally found her suit and I avoid buying anything (they had a sweet Sherwood stereo amp for $20) because I would have to carry it. We stopped for a loaf of bread at Schat's on the way home..

At the pool Sally met Elke from Germany. She lives in Wiesbaden and insisted we contact her when making our plans for cycling Europe next year. She has a friend who knows biking in Europe and offered her house as a stop over as we cycle the Rhine. We have made about 5 contacts across Europe while on this hike that will help when we plan and travel next summer.

The rest of the day and evening was filled with Internet surfing, info gathering, dinner, movies and Netflix.

Tomorrow it is off to the doctor to find out what the rest of our trip will be. More hiking?  Renting a car and little walking?  Will know tomorrow.
