The rain tapered off before dawn and we arose to broken clouds and sun. We had a camera walk to attend at 9:00am, so we had cold cereal for breakfast and headed to the Awahnee on our bikes. We were on time, and soon walked with the instructor, Mike, to Awahnee Meadow where he spent 90 minutes explaining how to compose great pictures. He droned on far to long for the kids, but they were polite and patient. After the lesson, we spent a few minutes taking some photos in the meadow, then returned to our campsite, and headed up to Crane Flat in the van and the Toulumne Grove of Sequoias. We hiked the 1.2 miles down to the grove, enjoyed climbing through a downed Sequoia and admiring the live ones. The rain in the Valley of the night before had fallen as snow here 2000’ above the valley. Our walk to the giant trees was on an inch or two of sloppy wet snow. The warming temperatures caused the snow on the tree branches to melt and drop their loads on us as we walked underneath.
Upon our return to the van, we stopped at Crane Flat store for a pop and a couple It’s Its, but they did not have any of our favorite ice cream sandwiches. We talked with the cashier, Jennifer, for a few minutes, then drove back to the Valley and up to Wawona Tunnel. Here, we assigned Hayden a photo assignment. He was to take 10 photos applying what we had learned earlier int he day. He did an admirable job. We drove back to camp, had Mac and Cheese for dinner, played Golf again and finally hit the sack.
