Sometimes outside forces must work on us to change our behavior. Yes, we really want to make that change in some aspect of our life, but it is so hard to do when we are trapped in our routines. But, if the routine gets broken, it frees us to reinvent the day and make a change.
The day before yesterday was supposed to be a zero day. Do nothing. Let the body rest. Total human slug. But, we were up at 6:00 am checking out hotels, breakfasted with Klaus and Marlen and we rode to Neuf-Breishein before checking in to our hotel at 1:00 pm. That's half a day spent in useful activity, hardly a human slug, zero day.
Today was a zero. With Sally's ankle swollen and injured there was no reason to get up and every reason to stay down. That's a good outside influence to keep us sedentary. Add to it the three hours of rain from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm and we can say we put in some serious human slug time.
We slept until 10:00 am. Got up to use the bathroom and start charging the battery for my phone and the rain started. Crawled back in the tent and slept, dozed and listened to my audiobook, "The Hunger Games-Mockingjay" until 2:00 pm when the rain stopped. That's 15 hours in bed. Now that's the makings of a good zero day!
With the rain done for a few hours we needed to see how Sally's ankle was fairing. Walking to the bathroom isn't the same as biking across Europe, so we limbered up the bikes and rode to town. Sally reported little discomfort and found she could get on and off the bike without killing herself. We rode to the other side of town to checkout another campsite, then back to ours. It looks good for our continued riding into Strasbourg tomorrow.
We had a dinner of salad we had bought at the grocery store yesterday. The bagged lettuce had survived the heat. Tomatoes, carrot salad, and hard boiled eggs were added to make a tasty meal.
The forecast showed rain from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. It was 5:50 pm, so I rode to the store to get a few supplies, hoping to beat the rain. I locked up my bike, stepped into the store and while searching for the right shampoo heard the loud drumming of rain on the roof. I lingered in the store until the downpour lessened, concerned about how Sally and our tent was doing in this deluge. I rode back in the rain to find Sally happily resting in the tent, very dry and happy.
It rained until about 8:00 pm, so we lounged some more. With the rain done for good and 90° forecast for tomorrow, we hung some laundry to dry and . . . Went to bed, again.
Now that's a zero day!!
