May 19, 2023 - Day 19 - To Burgos - 13.4 miles - +836’ - -1142’

We are off to the big town of Burgos today. The route is nearly flat the whole way, except for a 400’ vertical ridge to climb and descend. It is cold this morning, we think it is the coldest morning yet. See your breath cold. We stopped at a little store that was open for Sally’s caffeine hit. Then, with fleece and puffy on we ascended the ridge, where the wind was blowing strongly. When we dropped down the other side we found a little bar that was open. We also found Nikki and Tom. We stood outside and talked for a few minutes, but damn it was cold and they moved on. A quick trip to the potty and we moved thru town, stopping at the other end of town at a little bar for a couple cups of tea. We did not have Internet last night in Agés so I logged into the cafe’s and uploaded my blogs photos.

Our route now continued thru a maze of roads, freeway on and off ramps, around the east end of the airport and down a long (3-4 mile) stretch of 4 lane highway, starting our similar to pacific avenue south and ending up in a mile long stretch of downtown Burgos.

As we rounded the end of the airport Jay caught us and I started walking with him (retired Lutheran minister). After about 20 minutes Sally was 300 to 400 yards behind. I stopped on a bench to wait for her. She caught up and was in the midst of a potty emergency. There was no where to go. All industrial buildings, sidewalks and highway. I did se a patch of forest up ahead but when we got there it was severely fenced. Sally was now more than desperate. We hustled along the sidewalk, looking for a break in the fence. None. Finally, we came to a driveway entrance to what looked like a park. We scurried through, found some thick bushes and took care of business. The rest of the walk was trouble free. We were walking down the city street thinking about food and our destination when I saw a Donar Kabab place. The door was ajar, so we stepped in. The owner came forward and said “Nosotroa cerrado”-we are closed. Then he looked at us and said, “Tu quieres comer?”  We said “Si!” Emphatically and he prepared two chicken Kababs for us. His small boy of about four was playing while he worked and his wife came in. We finished our food, although there was so much meat in them we saved half or more to eat later today or tomorrow.

We navigated the next two miles thru the city to the cathedral. Our AirB&B was right behind it. I had messaged the host as to our arrival time and she led us up the stairs (76 of them) to our apartment. Amazing. Two bedroom, kitchen and living room. I returned to the street to find a grocery store and returned with enough food for the next two days.

We were resting when I thought of Melissa and we wondered where she was. I texted her. She replied immediately that she was in the plaza in front of the cathedral. We rallied, dressed and headed down to meet her for drinks. I had already washed my clothes and they were all wet so I wore my gym shorts and two puffy jackets. It was still freezing outside (50° with a 20 mph wind) but the sun shone so it took a little of the sting away. We met her two friends, Rose and Cindy and had a wonderful time getting to know each other for about 45 minutes.

We all retired to our rooms for the night. We had noodles with tomato sauce and broccoli for dinner.

Some writing and then to sleep. Another great day, especially due to the wonderful people we continue to share this adventure with.
